Restaurant at the beach
German Coy
Here is a restaurant in low season. They don't sell beers or even meals today but the people can still come over and sit without being surrounded by sellers as much as in other tourist spots.

Image San Gil Back to the Future

Sometimes it feels as if we’ve been travelling a world away in time, as well as distance. Girón, a small town with a lively cultural, historic and religious spirit, was our first introduction to Colombia’s colonial heritage.

It’s been a long time since we’ve hit a really good campsite. We certainly scored a bullseye in San Gil at the ‘Cajasan Guarigua’ just west of town. It’s an inexpensive family-oriented recreation centre in a very tranquil rural setting, with extremely clean facilities and friendly staff. Using it as our base for a few days, we explored the surrounding area and got our adrenalin rush on the white-water rafting trip. San Gil is a busy market town perched on the very steep slopes of the Rio Fonce valley, and is quickly developing as a thriving eco-adventure tourism centre. The Annual Equestrian and Agricultural Fair was an added attraction the weekend that we were in town.

It seems that DC3 has decided to throw a hissy fit! Perhaps because we’ve come the last 12,000 km in four months without a single visit to a workshop except for regular maintenance, she feels she’s not getting enough attention. Well, hopefully she’s had enough tender loving care in the last ten days to last for quite a while.

Could it be that our short term memories are fading with age? Only two short years ago, an eight hour horseback riding excursion around the hills and valleys of Vilcabamba in Ecuador left us with numerous aches and pains, and yet here we were signing up again. Oh, but this one would be different.

Yes, we finally made it to the hot springs! This particular ‘balneario’ was recommended by Sara and Oliva and was beautifully set in a natural amphitheatre with a cascading waterfall for a backdrop. A very soothing place to spend a few hours, and we relished every minute - until we emerged wrinkled as prunes and dizzy with the heat.

Image The tropical Cartagena

Ever since the white water rafting excursion in San Gil, we had been eagerly looking forward to our next anticipated adrenalin rush - paragliding high over the city of Medellín. Unfavourable weather conditions had kept these soaring fliers out of the skies for the past week, but our final day in Medellín was superb - totally clear and sunny. By 11 am we joined throngs of fellow adventure seekers, watching as they made the final dash to the end of the cliff, culminating in a take-off that appeared to be sheer bliss. For five hours we relaxed in the sunshine, patiently waiting our turn. Just as we were ready to buckle up the winds suddenly changed, dark clouds loomed overhead, and all flights were suspended until further notice. How could we be so unlucky??

Image The story behind Colombia4you

This year began with a new sensation inspected and completely different from all the feelings that I’d experienced before. I was told and I had to realize that I was going to lose my father sometime along this year. I didn’t have time for turning back; instead I started to work hard therefore I felt like I was giving the security to my father that I had an stability in my life as work was going well. After a couple of months many projects handled to me were done; I had enough money but unconsciously was spent within the confusion and the sadness of my soul.

WOW. No really, WOW. Colombia is a truly amazing place - the people and culture, the physical beauty of the country and the near total lack of other tourists are sure to spoil me for future travels in the years to come. BUT, back to th beginning I suppose before I get to far in...

Image Crossing Borders - From Venezuela to Colombia
Choking dust fills the air. Plastic bags swirl over bony, lifeless stray dogs. Shanty towns made of tarps, sticks, mud and garbage line the road. Shoddy merchandise piled high on pallets waits to be moved. Locals stand around looking distraught but edgy. Cripples limp up to our car begging for something; anything. These are all sure signs we are nearing the border. It’s not the best or the worst conditions I have seen at a frontier; just about average. Our old black Chevy Malibu rumbles through the scene unfazed, leaving the desperate to their misfortune.

Image Colombia The place! by Tecito
My trip began in the northern coastal city of Cartagena. The air assaults you as you step off the plane and onto the tarmac. 34 degrees and humidity of about 90%. You are in a constant state of "soaking-wet sweat" but you get used to it after a few days. As I made my way to El Centro in the taxi, the streets were fast moving and chaotic. I got that exciting feeling that anything can and will happen here. I knew that, good and bad, I was going to have an adventure here!

Taxis in Bogota

Easy now, since all have meters and a tariff table inside. You just read the number on the meter, grab the table and search for the COP value that corresponds to the number.
